The battery is the most expensive part of an e-bike, and the one riders worry about most. This guide explains what a replacement costs, what the city's battery laws mean for you, what changes the price, and what happens when you bring an e-bike in.

Every price is a starting price that includes parts and labor. You get the full quote before any work starts, and you decide. Battery options for electric scooters vary a lot by model, so we quote those in the shop.
Why we test before we replace
"My battery is dead" is one of the most common things we hear, and it is often not the battery. When an e-bike comes in with a battery complaint, our technicians check it in order:
- The charger, which fails more often than people expect.
- The charging port and its wiring, which wear and corrode, especially on e-bikes ridden in the rain.
- The connectors between the battery, the controller and the display.
- The pack itself, with a load and capacity test that shows how much usable capacity is left and how it holds up under demand.
If the pack is healthy and a $35 part is the problem, that is what we fix. If the pack is worn out, you get a clear answer and a price for a certified replacement.
What the law says about e-bike batteries in NYC
- Certified batteries only. Since September 16, 2023, NYC's Local Law 39 bans the sale of e-bike batteries that are not certified by an accredited lab to UL 2271, and e-bikes that are not certified to UL 2849.
- No rebuilt packs. Local Law 42 of 2023 bans assembling or reconditioning lithium-ion batteries using cells taken out of other batteries, and selling batteries made that way.
So a cheap "rebuilt" or "re-celled" pack is not a bargain in New York: it is illegal to sell, and it is exactly the kind of battery the law was written to stop. More in our guide to NYC's battery safety law.
What changes the price of a new e-bike battery
- Voltage and capacity. A 48V 20Ah pack costs more than a 36V 10Ah pack; more capacity means more cells.
- How it mounts. Rack-mounted, down-tube and frame-integrated batteries are different shapes, and each model uses its own.
- Availability. Packs for popular models are easier to source than packs for discontinued or imported ones.
- Certification. A certified pack costs more than an uncertified one, and in NYC it is the only kind that can be sold.
Signs an e-bike battery may be wearing out
These are the things riders tell us before a battery test:
- Range has dropped noticeably compared with when it was new
- The gauge drops fast, or the e-bike cuts out on hills or under hard acceleration
- It takes much longer to charge, or never reaches full

Replace the battery or replace the e-bike?
A new battery makes sense when the rest of the e-bike, motor, brakes and frame, is in good shape. If several major parts are worn, or the pack costs close to what a comparable new e-bike would, buying new can be the better deal. We will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on.
