Electric Scooter Battery Replacement: Cost, BMS Repair and What to Expect

Electric scooter battery pack replacement at Wilson's starts from $500, parts and labor included; the final price depends on the model and the pack. A new pack is not always the answer. A failed BMS, the circuit board that manages the battery, starts from $200, and a charger or charging port from $35. That is why we test before we quote a new battery. Pack and BMS replacement for electric scooters are done at our shops in cities where electric scooters are legal to ride, so call (516) 300-0944 first and we will tell you which shop to go to.

Battery, BMS or charger? Why we test first

An electric scooter that will not charge, dies early or shows zero bars can have a worn-out battery. It can also have a healthy battery behind a part that costs a fraction of a new pack. When an electric scooter comes in with a battery complaint, our technicians work through it in this order:

  1. The charger. A failed charger looks exactly like a dead battery from the outside.
  2. The charging port and its wiring. Ports take knocks and moisture, and a loose or corroded one stops the charge reaching the pack.
  3. The connectors and wiring between the battery, the controller and the display.
  4. The BMS. The battery management system is the board that balances the cells and shuts the pack off to protect it. When it fails, a pack with plenty of life left can read as empty or refuse to charge.
  5. The pack itself, with a load, capacity and discharge test that shows how much usable capacity is left and how the cells hold up under demand.

If a $35 part or a $200 BMS is the problem, that is the repair we quote. If the cells are worn out, you get a straight answer and a price for a new certified pack.

Why an electric scooter battery costs what it does

  • Voltage and capacity. Commuter electric scooters run on packs around 36V, performance models on 60V and more. A bigger pack means more cells and a higher price.
  • Model-specific shapes. Most electric scooter packs are built to fit one deck or stem, so the replacement has to match your model.
  • Labor. The pack usually sits sealed inside the deck, so the electric scooter is opened, the pack swapped and connected, and the deck resealed against water.
  • Availability. Packs for popular models are easier to source than packs for discontinued or imported ones.
  • Certification. A certified pack costs more than an uncertified one, and in New York City it is the only kind that can be sold.

NYC rules for replacement batteries

  • Certified batteries only. Since September 16, 2023, NYC's Local Law 39 bans the sale of batteries for electric scooters and e-bikes that are not certified by an accredited lab to UL 2271, and of electric scooters not certified to UL 2272.
  • No rebuilt packs. Local Law 42 of 2023 bans assembling or reconditioning lithium-ion batteries using cells taken out of other batteries, and selling batteries made that way.

A cheap "re-celled" pack from an online seller is not a shortcut in New York: it is illegal to sell here, and it is exactly the kind of battery the law was written to stop. Our guide to NYC's battery safety law has the details.

What riders tell us before a battery test

  • The range has dropped well below what it was when new
  • The battery gauge falls fast, or the electric scooter cuts out on hills or when accelerating hard
  • It takes much longer to charge, or never shows full
  • It will not power on at all

Any of these can be the battery, the BMS or something smaller, which is what the test sorts out. Most electric scooter batteries last two to four years; our guide to how long electric scooter batteries last covers what wears them out.

Safety warning: if a battery is swollen, has been in water, smells, or gets unusually hot, stop riding it and do not charge it. Bring it straight in. Our swollen or wet battery safety check starts from $70.

Replace the battery or buy a new electric scooter?

A new pack makes sense when the motor, brakes, frame and folding hinge are in good shape. If several major parts are worn, or the pack costs close to a comparable new electric scooter, buying new can be the better deal, and we will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on. Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace an electric scooter battery?

From $500 at Wilson's, parts and labor included. The final price depends on the voltage, capacity and shape of the pack your model needs.

What is a BMS, and can you replace just that?

The BMS, or battery management system, is the circuit board that balances the cells and protects the pack. When it is the part that failed, we can replace it, from $200, and keep the pack you have.

Which Wilson's shop replaces electric scooter batteries?

Pack and BMS replacement for electric scooters are done at our shops in cities where electric scooters are legal to ride. Call (516) 300-0944 first and we will tell you which shop to go to. Battery testing, charger and charging port repairs are available at every shop.

Can you rebuild my electric scooter battery with new cells?

Not from cells taken out of other batteries; NYC's Local Law 42 bans that. A worn pack is replaced with a certified one.

Do you replace batteries on electric scooters bought somewhere else?

Yes. Any brand, wherever you bought it. A simple inspection is free, and battery testing starts from $50.

How long does a battery replacement take?

It depends on whether the pack for your model is in stock or has to be ordered. We tell you when you bring it in.
