Where to Ride Electric Dirt Bikes in New York (2026)
Share
In New York, an electric dirt bike can be ridden on private land with the owner's permission, at motocross tracks and riding parks that allow it, and on public trail systems that are designated and posted for off-road vehicles, such as the Lewis County and St. Lawrence County trail systems. It can't be ridden on New York City streets, sidewalks, bike paths or in parks. New York State Police class electric dirt bikes as off-highway motorcycles, and the DMV requires New York registration, liability insurance away from your own property, and a USDOT-approved helmet.
- Electric dirt bikes are off-highway motorcycles under New York law, not e-bikes.
- Not allowed on public roads, sidewalks, bike paths or in parks unless fully registered, insured and street legal.
- Private land: only with the permission of the owner or lessee.
- Public land: only where it is specifically designated and posted for ATV use.
- New York registration and, anywhere but your own property, liability insurance.
- A USDOT-approved helmet for the rider and any passenger.
What New York law says
The New York State Police put it plainly in April 2026: electric dirt bikes and off-highway electric motorcycles are classified as off-highway motorcycles under state law, are not legal on public roads, sidewalks, bike paths or in parks unless fully registered, insured and street legal, and their use is limited to private property with permission.
The DMV treats an off-road motorcycle as an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). That means:
- Registration. You need a valid New York registration to ride, unless the machine is registered in another state to a resident of that state, or is only used at competitions.
- Insurance. You may not ride anywhere in New York except on your own property unless it is covered by liability insurance.
- Where. Private land only with the owner's or lessee's permission. Public land only if it is specifically designated for ATV use and posted with a sign. Highways only where the state or a local authority has designated and posted them for ATV use.
- Helmet. The rider and any passenger must wear a USDOT-approved helmet.
- Young riders. Riders under 14 need adult supervision, or must be on land owned or leased by a parent or guardian. Riders aged 14 and 15 have the same options, or can ride where ATV use is allowed once they have completed an approved safety course.
For how electric dirt bikes differ from e-bikes and mopeds, see our guide to NYC e-bike laws.
Where you can't ride
- New York City streets, sidewalks and bike lanes. Electric dirt bikes are off-road motorcycles, not for New York City streets.
- Parks. NYC Parks rules allow motor vehicles only on park roads and in designated parking areas, and the State Police list parks among the places electric dirt bikes may not go.
- State forests and Forest Preserve land. The Department of Environmental Conservation allows motor vehicles only on access roads posted as open to them; off-road use is prohibited unless specifically permitted by signs, posted notice or a DEC permit.
Private land
For most riders, this is the simplest option: your own land, or land where the owner or lessee has given you permission. Your own property is also the one place in New York where the DMV doesn't require liability insurance.
Motocross tracks and riding parks
These New York tracks and parks state on their own websites that they are open to dirt bikes or off-road motorcycles. Most don't yet mention electric models, and some have rules written for gas machines, such as muffler or spark arrestor requirements, so call ahead and ask whether they accept electric dirt bikes, and check current dates, fees and gear rules.

Public trail systems
A few New York counties run trail systems that include off-road motorcycles. Both below need a permit, and both close for part of the year.
- Lewis County Trail System (Tug Hill). The county says its trail access includes dirt bikes, ATVs and side-by-sides. A county permit is required, and the season runs from spring, depending on conditions, to the Tuesday after Columbus Day. Details are in the county's recreation newsletter.
- St. Lawrence County Multi-Use Recreational Trail System. Open to registered ATVs, including dirt bikes, from May 15 to September 15. The 2026 trail rules require every machine to be registered and insured, an approved helmet, eye protection and over-the-ankle footwear, and a muffler and spark arrestor, so ask the county how that applies to an electric model.
Racing an electric dirt bike
Electric classes are starting to appear. The Central New York Motocross Riders Association's 2026 rules include an electric class when enough riders enter, and let smaller electric models run in some youth classes. An AMA membership is required. See the CNYMRA rules.
Before you ride: what to bring and what to ask
- Your registration and proof of liability insurance.
- A USDOT-approved helmet, plus the gear the track asks for, often boots, gloves, goggles and a chest protector.
- Ask the track or trail whether electric dirt bikes are allowed, and how its muffler or spark arrestor rule applies to them.
- For riders under 16, check the age and supervision rules, and bring a parent to sign waivers.
