Can You Ride an Electric Scooter in the Rain or Snow? Water Ratings Explained

You can ride most electric scooters in light rain, but only up to what their water rating allows, and no rating makes an electric scooter safe to ride through deep puddles or flooded streets. An IPX4 electric scooter is built for splashes; IPX5 and IPX6 handle rain and spray much better; IPX7 usually applies to the battery pack, not the whole electric scooter. Water damage is also not covered by warranty, so the rating matters more than most riders think.
Every fall and winter, water and salt damage become some of the most common repairs in our NYC shops. This guide explains what the ratings on the spec sheet mean, which models we sell have the strongest protection, what winter does to an electric scooter, and when to bring it in.
- IPX4: splashes from any direction. Fine for wet roads, not for riding in steady rain.
- IPX5: water jets. Good for rain.
- IPX6: powerful water jets. The best whole-machine rating you will usually see.
- IPX7: short immersion, usually quoted for the battery pack only.
- No rating covers riding through deep water, and water damage is excluded from warranty.
- Water and salt damage repair from $50; winter cleanup and storage prep from $30.
What IP ratings mean on an electric scooter
An IP (ingress protection) rating has two digits. The first is protection against dust and solids, the second against water. An X means that part was not tested. So IPX5 is tested for water only, and IP55 is tested for both dust and water.

Two things spec sheets do not tell you. Ratings are measured on new units in a lab, and seals age with vibration, heat and cold. And a rating is often given for one part: "IPX7 battery" does not mean the controller, display or connectors are rated IPX7 too. Read which part the number applies to.

For NYC street riding, the Segway F3 (IPX6) and the NAVEE GT3 Max (IPX5) are the practical picks: good protection, designed for 20 mph, and easy to live with. The Segway Max G3 has even stronger protection, but it is built for up to 28 mph, above New York's 20 mph limit for street-legal electric scooters. Riding in the rain: the safety side
Water is not only a risk to the electronics. Wet roads, painted lines, metal plates and leaves all cut grip, and braking distances get longer. Small wheels and a low deck also throw more spray at the electric scooter's underside, where the battery and wiring usually sit. Tires with good tread and working lights matter more in the wet than any spec sheet number.
What winter does to an electric scooter
- Range drops in the cold. Lithium batteries deliver less in freezing weather, so expect fewer miles per charge in January than in June. Many makers also publish an operating range; Segway's Max G3 and F3, for example, are rated for 14°F to 104°F.
- Road salt corrodes. Salt water gets into connectors, bearings, brake parts, bolts and the folding hinge, and keeps working long after the snow has gone.
- Slush and grit wear parts faster. Brake pads, bearings and tires all wear quicker in winter.
- Grip is lower. Ice and packed snow are dangerous on small wheels. On those days, the safest ride is no ride.

When an electric scooter or e-bike comes in for water or salt damage, our technicians work through it in order:
- The battery first, for safety: the case, the seals and the pack itself.
- Connectors and wiring, where corrosion usually starts, between the battery, controller, display and throttle.
- The controller, which often sits low in the deck.
- Brakes, bearings and the folding hinge, which salt attacks first.
- A clear price before any work starts, or a free simple inspection if you just want to know where it stands.

Water damage and your warranty
Water damage is excluded from the Wilson's warranty, as it is from almost every electric scooter maker's warranty, whatever the IP rating. That is the real reason to buy a model with a strong rating if you ride year round, and to have it looked at after winter rather than waiting for something to fail. Frequently asked questions
Can I ride my electric scooter in the rain?
In light rain, if it is rated IPX5 or higher, generally yes, with extra care for grip and braking. IPX4 models are built for splashes, not steady rain. No electric scooter should be ridden through deep water.
Is IPX5 waterproof?
No. IPX5 means water resistant against jets of water, which covers rain. Waterproof against immersion is IPX7, and that is usually quoted for the battery only.
Can I ride an electric scooter in the snow?
Not on ice or packed snow; small wheels lose grip quickly. On cleared, salted roads it is possible, but salt corrodes parts, so plan a winter cleanup.
Does cold weather damage electric scooter batteries?
Cold cuts range while you ride, and repeated freezing ages the cells faster. Keep to the maker's charging and storage instructions.
