Electric Scooter Tires: Pneumatic vs Solid vs Tubeless, and What Tire Service Costs

Electric scooters use three kinds of tires. Air-filled (pneumatic) tires with an inner tube ride the softest but can get a flat. Tubeless tires ride almost as softly and resist punctures better. Solid tires, also called airless or honeycomb, never go flat but ride firmer. For New York City's potholes, most riders are happiest on tubeless tires with suspension. At our shops, flat tire repair is from $40.

Electric scooter tire types compared

Air-filled with inner tube Tubeless Solid / airless / honeycomb
Comfort Softest Soft Firmest; needs good suspension
Grip in the wet Good Good Less, especially on painted lines and metal plates
Flats Can puncture or pinch Resist punctures; small holes often seal Never go flat
Upkeep Pressure needs keeping up Pressure needs keeping up; sealant ages Almost none
Weight Light Light Heavier for the size
Our service, from Flat repair $40; tire and tube $65 to $120 Tubeless setup and sealant $30 Airless tire install $40

Every price is a starting price at our shops and includes parts and labor; the final price depends on your model and the tire.

Air-filled tires with an inner tube

A classic air-filled tire has a separate inner tube inside it. The air soaks up cracks, curbs and expansion joints, so it's the most comfortable choice on a model without much suspension, and it grips well. The trade-off is flats: glass, wire and staples can puncture the tube, and a tire run too soft can pinch the tube against the rim on a hard hit. The seated Hiboy Q2 rides on large 14-inch air-filled tires.

Tubeless and self-healing tires

A tubeless tire seals directly against the rim, with no inner tube to pinch. Many carry a sealant layer inside, so a small puncture closes up as you ride; makers call these self-sealing, self-healing or leak-proof tires. You keep the comfort of air with far fewer flats, which is why most of our NYC commuter picks use them:

Sealant doesn't last forever, and a large cut or a sidewall tear is beyond what it can close. Our tubeless setup and sealant service is from $30.

Solid, airless and honeycomb tires

Solid tires are made of rubber or foam with no air inside; honeycomb tires have hollow chambers molded in to soften the ride. They never go flat and need almost no upkeep, which suits riders who never want to think about tires. They ride firmer and grip less in the wet, so they work best on a model with suspension. The Hiboy S2 and Hiboy S2 Pro use honeycomb tires with rear suspension, and the 25.6 lb E-TWOW Booster ES pairs solid airless tires with front and rear shock absorbers.

Already riding an air-filled model and tired of flats? Our technicians can fit airless, no-flat tires from $40 on many models; ask at any shop whether yours is a good fit.

Which tire is best for NYC?

  • Daily commute on rough streets: tubeless tires, 10 inches or larger, with suspension. See the best commuter electric scooters for NYC.
  • You never want a flat: solid or honeycomb tires, on a model with suspension at both ends if you can.
  • Most comfort, or a seated model: large air-filled tires.
  • Rain and winter: air-filled or tubeless tires grip better than solid ones in the wet. See riding in rain and winter.

Bigger tires also matter: a 10-inch tire rolls over cracks and potholes more easily than an 8-inch one. Our NYC electric scooter buying guide covers the rest.

E-bike tires

Most e-bikes ride on air-filled tires with inner tubes, from narrow city tires to 4-inch-wide fat tires that float over rough ground; see the best fat tire e-bikes. Our technicians repair and replace e-bike tires and tubes, and handle wheel truing and spoke replacement from $100.

Frequently asked questions

Are solid or air-filled tires better on an electric scooter?

Air-filled and tubeless tires ride softer and grip better, especially in the wet. Solid tires never go flat and need almost no upkeep, but ride firmer. For NYC streets, tubeless tires with suspension are the best all-round choice.

Why does my electric scooter keep getting flat tires?

When it comes in, our technicians check the tire for glass, wire or a staple still lodged in the rubber, the tube for pinch damage from running at low pressure, and the rim for a sharp edge or damaged rim tape. Fixing the cause, not just the hole, is what stops the next flat. Flat tire repair is from $40.

How much does it cost to fix a flat electric scooter tire?

Flat tire repair with an inner tube is from $40 at our shops, and a new tire and tube is from $65 to $120, parts and labor included. A simple inspection is free.

Can I change my electric scooter to airless tires?

On many models, yes. Our technicians fit airless, no-flat tires from $40; ask at any shop whether your model is a good fit.

Is it safe to ride on a damaged tire?

No. A tire that is cut, bulging or coming off the rim can fail suddenly. Stop riding and bring it straight in; walk-ins are welcome at our shops in Flushing, Elmhurst, Brooklyn and Long Island City.
