NYC Electric Scooter Buying Guide (2026): What to Buy, Borough by Borough
Share
The right electric scooter for New York City is one designed for 20 mph or less and under 100 lb, light enough for your stairs, with tires and suspension that can take potholes. For most riders that is the Segway F3; on a budget, the NAVEE G5; for a walk-up or the train, the 25.6 lb E-TWOW Booster ES. Test ride them at our shops in Flushing, Elmhurst, Brooklyn and Long Island City. See all our electric scooters for adults.
- A street-legal electric scooter in New York is built for 20 mph or less and weighs under 100 lb; a seat is allowed.
- Ride at 15 mph or less, in bike lanes and on streets posted at 30 mph or less, never on sidewalks.
- Riders must be 16 or older; a helmet is required at 16 and 17.

What New York City streets demand from an electric scooter
- Weight you can carry. Walk-ups, subway stairs and small elevators make weight the first filter. See the lightest electric scooters for NYC.
- Tires and suspension for potholes. Tubeless or air-filled tires ride softer; solid tires never go flat. Suspension at both ends helps on broken pavement.
- A water rating for rain and slush. IPX5 or better if you ride year-round; winter salt is hard on connectors. See riding in rain and winter.
- Range with room to spare. Cold weather and stop-start riding cut range well below the rating.
- Theft protection. A light electric scooter can come inside with you; tracking such as Apple Find My helps if it doesn't.
