Electric Scooter Motor Repair or Replace? What We Check and What It Costs

The short answer

An electric scooter motor that stops, stutters or grinds can often be repaired instead of replaced: the fault is frequently a hall sensor, a phase wire, a connector, a bearing or the controller. Our technicians test those first, so you don't pay for a new motor you don't need. Motor repair starts from $100, parts and labor included, and a simple inspection is always free on any brand.

Safety first

If the motor surges on its own, keeps driving when you brake, smells burnt, smokes or locks the wheel, stop riding and bring it in. Walk it to us or bring it by car; don't ride it.

How much does electric scooter motor repair cost?

Job From
Simple inspection (any brand, any issue) Free
Full diagnosis, with disassembly or test equipment $30, waived on repairs over $100
Motor repair (hub and mid-drive) $100
Hall sensor and phase wire repair $100
Motor disk adjustment $35
Wheel and hub bearing replacement $100
Controller replacement $35
Error code fix $35
Wiring harness and connector repair $35
Throttle repair $50
Water and salt damage $50
Mid-drive motor replacement (e-bikes) $300

Every price is a starting price that includes parts and labor; the final price depends on your model and the part it needs. A replacement hub motor for an electric scooter is quoted after diagnosis, because the motor itself varies so much by model. See the full price list on our repair service page.

Should you repair or replace an electric scooter motor?

We open and test the motor before we recommend either. In general:

  • Repair when the fault is a failed hall sensor, a damaged phase wire or connector, worn bearings, or a loose axle or mount. These are fixed without replacing the motor.
  • Replace when the copper windings have burnt or shorted, magnets have cracked or come loose, the axle or hub shell is cracked, or water has corroded the inside badly. A motor in that state usually costs more to rebuild than to replace.
  • Talk it through when the repair price comes close to the value of the electric scooter. We'll tell you plainly, and you decide.

On a dual-motor electric scooter, we test both motors. Often only one has failed.

What do our technicians check when an electric scooter motor stops working?

A motor that won't run is often not a motor fault at all. We check, in this order:

  1. The error code. Most displays show a code when the controller detects a fault. We read it, and fixing the fault behind it starts from $35.
  2. The throttle. A failing throttle sends no signal, or the wrong one, so the motor never gets the command. Throttle repair starts from $50.
  3. The brake cutoff switches. A stuck switch tells the controller you're braking, and the motor won't drive. See electric scooter brake repair.
  4. Connectors and phase wires. The thick wires that carry power to the motor run through the axle and can chafe, burn or pull loose, especially after a crash or a pothole.
  5. The hall sensors. These small sensors tell the controller where the motor is in its turn. When one fails, the motor stutters, shudders or only starts with a push.
  6. The controller. It drives the motor, and a failed controller can look exactly like a dead motor. Controller replacement starts from $35.
  7. The motor itself. We test the windings, spin it by hand for bearing roughness and magnet contact, and check the axle and mounts.

Why does my electric scooter motor make noise?

The noises we hear most often come from worn wheel or hub bearings (a rumble or grind that gets louder with speed), a loose axle nut or mount (a clunk on bumps), something rubbing at the wheel, or a damaged magnet inside the motor (a scrape or knock once a turn).

Bearing replacement starts from $100 and a motor disk adjustment from $35. A noise that comes with a loss of power points us to the hall sensors or phase wires first.

Why does my electric scooter motor stutter or lose power?

A motor that jerks, shudders at low speed or cuts in and out usually has a failed hall sensor, a damaged phase wire or a loose connector. Less often it's the controller, or a throttle that's sending a noisy signal. A motor that runs but feels weak can also be getting too little power, so we test the battery's output under load as part of the diagnosis.

Can water damage an electric scooter motor?

Yes. Water that gets past the seals corrodes the hall sensors, the connectors and the windings, and salty winter slush is worse. Water and salt damage repair starts from $50, and the earlier we see it, the more we can save. Our guide to riding an electric scooter in the rain explains what water ratings do and don't cover.

Hub motor or mid-drive: what's different to repair?

Almost every electric scooter uses a hub motor, built into the wheel. Repairing one means taking the wheel off and opening the motor. Many e-bikes use a hub motor too. Others use a mid-drive, mounted at the pedals, which drives the chain and has its own sensors.

We repair both kinds from $100, and a mid-drive motor replacement on an e-bike starts from $300. For more on e-bikes, see e-bike repair in NYC.

Is a failed motor covered by the warranty?

If it's a manufacturing defect on a ride you bought from us, often yes. Wilson's-designed rides carry 3 years: parts and labor in year one, then labor covered with parts paid by you in years two and three.

Every other brand we carry has 1 year against manufacturing defects, and we manage the claim with the maker. Water damage, collisions, misuse and unauthorized repairs are excluded. The details are in our warranty policy.

Where can I get my electric scooter motor repaired?

At any Wilson's shop. We repair any brand of electric scooter or e-bike, wherever you bought it: Segway and Ninebot, Hiboy, Gotrax, Kaabo, Apollo, Dualtron, Razor and more, plus e-bikes from Aventon, Lectric, Rad Power, Super73 and others. Express service runs at every shop, and delivery riders get priority at all of them.

Walk in, no appointment needed, or call (516) 300-0944. To plan ahead, book a repair online.

If a repair would cost more than your electric scooter is worth and you'd rather replace it, browse electric scooters, such as the Segway F3 or the Hiboy S2 Pro for commuting.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fix an electric scooter motor?

Motor repair at Wilson's starts from $100, and hall sensor and phase wire repair from $100, parts and labor included. Many "dead motor" problems turn out to be the controller, a connector or the throttle, which start from $35 to $50.

How much does it cost to replace an electric scooter motor?

A replacement hub motor for an electric scooter is quoted after diagnosis, because the motor varies so much by model. On e-bikes, a mid-drive motor replacement starts from $300.

Can a burnt electric scooter motor be repaired?

Sometimes. If only a phase wire or connector has burnt, we repair it. If the copper windings themselves have burnt, the motor usually needs replacing. We open it and tell you which.

Why does my electric scooter motor only work after I push it?

That usually points to a failed hall sensor: without it, the controller can't tell where the motor is until the wheel is already turning. Hall sensor and phase wire repair starts from $100.

Do you repair motors on electric scooters you didn't sell?

Yes. Any brand, any issue, wherever you bought it, at every Wilson's shop.

Is the diagnosis free?

A simple inspection, where we look it over and tell you what we find, is always free. Opening a motor or using test equipment is a full diagnosis at $30, and it comes off the bill if your repair is more than $100.
