How Far Can an E-Bike Go? Range, Battery Care and What We Check
Share
Most e-bikes are rated for 25 to 80 miles on one charge. In our range, the folding Hiboy C1 is rated for up to 26.2 miles with pedal assist, the Hiboy EX6 and EX6F for up to 75 miles, and the Segway Myon for up to 80. Real-world range is usually lower: throttle use, a heavy load, hills, cold weather and stop-start city riding all cut it. If your e-bike's range has dropped, our technicians test the battery and everything that affects range, from $50.

What cuts an e-bike's real-world range
Makers measure range with a light rider on flat ground, at a steady speed, in mild weather, usually on a low assist level. City riding is different. The biggest factors:
- Throttle versus pedal assist. Riding on the throttle alone uses far more battery than pedaling with assist. It is why many makers quote two figures, a lower one for throttle and a higher one for pedal assist.
- Assist level. The highest assist level gets you moving fastest and drains the battery fastest.
- Weight. A heavier rider, a delivery bag or a loaded rack all take more energy to move.
- Hills and stop-start traffic. Every climb and every restart from a red light costs energy.
- Cold. Lithium batteries give noticeably less range in winter. See riding in rain and winter.
- Tires and brakes. Soft tires and a brake that rubs make the motor work harder.
- Battery age. Every lithium battery holds less charge as it ages.
The practical rule: choose an e-bike whose rated range is comfortably more than your longest regular day, so a cold morning or a heavy load doesn't leave you short.
Charging and storing an e-bike battery safely
The FDNY's guidance for lithium-ion batteries in New York City:
- Use only the charger made for your battery.
- Don't charge it unattended or overnight, and don't use an extension cord or power strip.
- Don't charge or store it where it blocks a door or the way out of a room.
- Use a safe charging and storage room in your building if there is one.
Beyond that, follow your maker's own charging and storage instructions. Only certified batteries can be sold in NYC; see NYC's battery safety law.
When range drops: what our technicians check
Lost range is not always the battery. When an e-bike comes in with a range complaint, our technicians work through everything that affects it:
- The battery itself: its voltage under load, its real capacity against its rating, and how it discharges.
- Charging: the charger's output, the charging port and the battery connectors.
- The assist system: the pedal-assist and torque sensors and the speed sensor, which decide how much the motor helps.
- Drag: brakes that rub, wheel bearings and tire condition.
- Wiring and connectors between the battery, controller and motor.
Then we tell you what we found and what it costs to fix, before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions
How far can an e-bike go on one charge?
Most are rated for 25 to 80 miles. In our range, from up to 26.2 miles for the folding Hiboy C1 to up to 80 miles for the Segway Myon. Expect less with the throttle, a heavy load, hills or cold weather.
Does using the throttle reduce range?
Yes, a lot. Riding on the throttle alone uses far more battery than pedaling with assist, which is why makers often quote a lower throttle-only range.
Why has my e-bike's range dropped?
It can be the battery aging, but also a charger or connector fault, a sensor telling the motor to work harder, or a rubbing brake. Our technicians check the battery under load and its real capacity, the charging side, the assist sensors and anything causing drag. Range loss service is from $50.
Does cold weather affect e-bike range?
Yes. Lithium batteries give less range in the cold, so plan on shorter trips in winter.
Where can I get my e-bike battery tested in NYC?
At any of our shops in Flushing, Elmhurst, Brooklyn and Long Island City. Any brand, wherever you bought it; walk-ins are welcome.
