Before you choose

Three things that decide the right electric scooter.

Speed class

Commuter, fast or hyper.

Commuter electric scooters top out around 20 mph and weigh least. Fast models run 30 mph and up on a single motor. Performance machines pair two motors with big packs and suspension. Pick a speed class above, then compare the two you're between at any Wilson's shop; test rides are on models designed for 20 mph or less. For New York City streets, see the best commuter electric scooters for NYC.

Range

Real range is about the pack, not the badge.

The range filter uses each maker's rated figure. Rider weight, hills and cold weather all take a share, so if you need 20 miles a day, shop the 30-40 mile class and you'll never think about it. Compare the longest-range models in best long-range electric scooters.

After the sale

Bought here, serviced here.

Ask about any electric scooter on this page at our stores; test rides at our New York and San Francisco shops are on models designed for 20 mph or less, and every one is repaired in house by our own technicians, whichever brand it is. Simple inspection is always free.

How to choose an electric scooter

The right electric scooter depends on where and how far you ride. Start with the rules: in New York State an electric scooter has to be designed for 20 mph or less and weigh under 100 lb, and in New York City you ride at 15 mph or less (see are electric scooters legal in NYC?). Then match range, weight and ride quality to your trip. Rated range is the maker's figure in ideal conditions, so real range is shorter with a heavier rider, hills and cold. If you carry it up stairs or onto a train, weight and the fold matter more than top speed. For rough streets, look at tire size, tubeless or solid tires and suspension at both ends; our guide to electric scooter tires explains the trade-offs.

Commuter electric scooters

Most riders start here: electric scooters designed for 20 mph or less, light enough to carry and rated for a week of short trips. Browse commuter electric scooters or read our best commuter electric scooters for NYC.

Long-range electric scooters

For longer commutes, bigger batteries carry you further between charges. Long-range electric scooters list the maker's rated range on every page, and our best long-range electric scooters guide compares them.

Foldable and lightweight electric scooters

For walk-ups, the subway and car trunks: foldable electric scooters, with weights from the maker's spec. See the lightest electric scooters for NYC.

Electric scooters with a seat

Sit down for longer rides and errands. Electric scooters with a seat range from compact city models to seated machines built for higher speeds; our guide shows which ones fit New York's rules.

Off-road, fast and high-performance electric scooters

Dual motors, hydraulic brakes and long-travel suspension: off-road electric scooters, fast electric scooters and high-performance electric scooters. These are built for private land and places whose rules allow them. Models over 20 mph or 100 lb aren't sold or shipped to New York City addresses.
